CLARITY: How pure/clean the stone is to the naked eye. The highest rating of FL-Flawless to the lowest rating of I/3-Inclusions (flaws) seen with the naked eye.

•  How do the 4 C’s determine the quality and price of the Diamond?

Color: As a rule, the closer the color is to being colorless (D) the more valuable and beautiful it is.

Clarity: The higher the purity rating the more expensive the stone. Ratings listed from highest to lowest are:
FL=Flawless, VVS/1=Very Very Slightly Included, VVS/2=Very Very Slightly Included, VS/1=Very Small Inclusions, VS/2=Very Small Inclusions, SI/1=Small Inclusions (not seen with the naked eye),SI/2=Small Inclusions (not seen with the naked eye), SI/3=Small Inclusions, I/1=Inclusions (seen with the naked eye)I/2=Inclusions (seen with the naked eye), and I/3=Inclusions (seen with the naked eye). Inclusions are flaws and almost all diamonds have some type of flaw of some kind.
Carat: The heavier the stone the more it would cost IF the above C’s are a decent rating.  It is possible to buy a larger carat stone that is lower in the color and clarity rating, than a smaller carat stone that has a higher color and clarity rating.
Cut: Ideal/Excellent, Very Good, Good and Poor. A Good rating or higher is considered sufficient for most of the shapes of diamonds.

•  Certified Diamonds VS NON Certified Diamonds

A Certified stone has actually been looked at by a gemologist and graded based on the 4 C’s. Certified stones can easily be compared to other certified stones before making a purchase. When purchasing a NON-Certified stone, you have only the word of the one selling it to you, which can be ok, if you know and trust the person you are purchasing from.

GENERAL JEWELRY CARE

•  How should I clean and care for my diamond jewelry

Soaps, lotions and other everyday items can leave a residue on your diamonds and setting, reducing the brilliance of the stones.  There are jewelry cleaning solutions in the marketplace that you can use to clean the stones and setting, but an easy household solution is to use one part ammonia to four parts water, and lightly brush with a soft bristled tooth brush, then rinse in warm water.  Dry with a lint-free cloth.

All stones set in a prong setting should be checked every 18-24 months as these prongs can/do wear down, making it easy to loose a stone.

•  How should I clean and care for colored gemstone items?

Colored stones vary in cleaning methods.  The best bet for cleaning a colored gem is to consult with a jewelry professional.

•  How should I clean and care for colored gemstone items?

Diamonds and other gems can scratch each other if they rub together, and this damages the polish characteristics.  It is best to store your jewelry items in a soft jeweler’s cloth so that they don’t come into contact unnecessarily. Store valuable items in a safe place.  Even if you have insurance, jewelry loss can be a very emotional experience, and you may never be able to replace some pieces.
